Establishment of the Departments

Responsibilities of the Department

The School of Distance Education (which was formerly known as the Department of Correspondence Courses) was primarily set up to cater for the needs of in-service teachers of English. Hence, two teacher training programmes were started in the distance mode: the Post-Graduate Certificate in the Teaching of English and the Post Graduate Diploma in the Teaching of English. Later, the M.A programme in English was introduced. The teacher training programmes equip teachers with a) the latest methods and techniques in teaching English b) the knowledge of how to produce relevant materials for teaching c) knowledge of a scientific analysis of language and d) knowledge of how to interpret literary texts.
