Dhap

Dhap is performed by the Kondhs living in Bolangir and Kalahandi districts. The songs called Dhap geeta are in the Kandhan language mixed with Sambalpuri.

This dance is usually performed during marriage ceremonies by the dhangdas and dhangdis. The singer is usually called the Dhapua and the instrument played is called dhap.

This instrument is made of a circular iron frame covered with hide. There are two thin bamboo sticks that the player uses to strike the hide and produce sound. These sticks are called chepna and danga. The player holds the dhap under his left shoulder. He strikes the hide with the danga in his right hand and the chepna in his left hand.

While dancing the boys and girls bend forward and backward in rhythmic movements with their hands around the other’s waists. The dhap songs are usually erotic and are meant for courting a fellow dhangda or dhangdi.
