- Dr. Utpal Lahiri is a theoretical linguist specializing in semantics and its interfaces with syntax and pragmatics. He received a B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Kanpur and then switched to Linguistics, receiving an M.A. from Syracuse University (NY, USA) and a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, USA). He has published widely-cited articles in journals like Natural Language Semantics, Linguistics and Philosophy, Lingua, on a variety of topics in semantics, mainly polarity and the semantics of interrogatives (with data mostly from English and Spanish), some of which are considered seminal in the field. He is also the author of a book (published by OUP International) and co-editor of another (published by Kluwer/Springer International). He has recently worked on the semantics of modals, and is currently revising two articles on the semantics and pragmatics of scalar particles in Modern Greek and Spanish.
