The Department also offers a Ph.D in Linguistics, with coursework of 2 semesters (1 year), which is compulsory. The duration of the programme is three (minimum) to five years (maximum). For successful completion of the Research Programme leading to the award of the PhD degree, a student shall be required to accumulate a total of 120 Credits as specified below:
Thesis: 60 Credits
Publications /Paper presentations: 20 Credits
Eligibility:
M.A. in Linguistics/ Phonetics/ Applied Linguistics with 55% marks for general/OBC, 50% marks for SC/ST candidates
OR
M.A. or M.Phil. in English (with specialization in Linguistics and Phonetics) with a minimum GPA of 3.50 or with 55% marks for general/OBC, 50% marks for SC/ST candidates
OR
PGCTE/DTE (with adequate background* in Linguistics and Phonetics) with a minimum GPA of 3.00.
*Adequate background implies completion of at least two of the following four courses:
Basic Issues in Syntax, Basic Issues in Phonology, Basic Issues in Semantics, Introduction to Phonetics, Introduction to Sociolinguistics, Language Acquisition
OR
Pursuing any of the qualifying programmes mentioned above (provided the candidate has passed the exam by the time of admission and has scored the minimum eligibility percentage as mentioned above)
Admission:
The notification for admission is issued in the month of December/January. Admission is on the basis of the eligibility criteria, an online entrance test and an interview.
Coursework:
During the coursework, the research scholars are required to do 4 papers over 2 semesters. Of the 4 papers, the paper on Research Methodology is compulsory. The remaining papers, which are reading courses, will be offered based on the research scholars area of research.
